INTRODUCING FRACTIONS

Outcomes: By the end of Grade Four students will be expected to identify and model fractions and mixed numbers.

Background: Fraction Info

Learning Activities: 1.  Give each student several paper cut outs of a square and have them fold the shape once then examine the results.

Discuss by asking questions like:

- What are the different ways the square can be folded with only one fold?
- Which folds result in equal parts?

2.  Repeat the procedure with a circle.

3.  Using a rectangle have the students make two folds.  Compare the different fold lines.

4.  In the Math scribbler, have students record the fold lines that result in two congruent parts and other congruent parts, by drawing pictures and writing sentences to go with the pictures.  (The may glue in the original shapes and draw pictures to show additional folds.)

5.  Allow students to experiment with various shapes and different folding techniques.  Encourage them to try any idea that comes to mind, and to record the result.

Evaluation: Ask students to identify shapes that show that the shapes have been divided fractionally; that is into the correct number of parts and that each part is equal; they must be the same size.
