TopicStory Characters

Outcomes:  Students will gain understanding of how authors develop story characters.

(This will develop over several class periods.)

Materials Needed:   Books
  Poster paper
  Index cards

Learning Activities:

1.  Students will spend several class periods reading different books looking for characters that are described well.

2.  As a class brainstorm “Character traits”.  Post the list where students can refer to it frequently.

3.  Students choose a character and make a poster with a picture of the character in the centre and character traits around the picture in advertising fashion.  (Book characters that are also popular in t.v. and movies are not the best choices because it is hard to determine if Information is garnered from reading or watching.)

4.  Next brainstorm physical description traits.  Have students return to their books and copy out sentences that have physical description of the character.

5.  Using the sentences from the book as a basis, each student writes a paragraph describing the character’s appearance.  Edited copies of this paragraph are written on index cards and posted with the character trait poster.

Evaluation: Have a “Book Character Party” where each student comes dressed in costume as the character studied.  At the party each student introduces him/herself as the character explaining why the costume was chosen, interesting facts about the character and what that character likes to eat.  Each student brings a snack for the party that the character would choose to eat. During the party students converse and answer questions as the character would.
