Subject: Health
Topic: Self Esteem - Trading Cards
Outcomes: Students will:
-demonstrate respect and caring when relating with classmates
-identify and demonstrate effective group communication skills
Activities:
1. Cut cardstock into rectangles that measure 6.5 cm by 9 cm. Nine per student.
2. On the front of each card they draw a picture of something that is important to them and color it nicely, making it look like the front of a trading card. Each card can be the same or they can all be different.
3. On the reverse of each card they record information about themselves without giving out personal information like address or phone number. The information should include first name and favorites like sports, colour, food etc..
4. After completing all cards they are allowed class time to trade with their classmates. In preparation for this rules need to be set up for the trading to ensure that no student is left out of the trades. Some sample rules might be:
-you may not refuse to trade with anyone who asks to trade with you
-you may only have one card from each person
-once you have received a card you may not trade the card you were given.
This whole activity takes several class periods as students work hard to create attractive cards that will be desirable to others.
Trading card holders that hold nine cards can be purchased at a "dollar" store. This makes the collection "official".
Evaluation: As students trade with each other observe the interaction with an eye to behaviour referred to in the outcomes.
