As stated in the The Foundation Document for the Atlantic Canada Social Studies Curriculum, the nature of the Social Studies curriculum:
-integrates concepts and processes, and ways of thinking drawn from the diverse disciplines of humanities, social sciences and pure sciences.
-recognizes the value of the different disciplines in providing avenues and perspectives to help students understand issues and problems.
-provides a means for students to reflect on issues affecting their own lives from personal, academic, pluralistic and global perspectives.
-is designed to help each learner construct perspectives through learn more about the world around them and to listen, understand and respect the perspectives of others.
