The following information is from the Atlantic Canada Mathematics curriculum guide.

It provides Background and Rationale for the mathematics program.

There are four unifying ideas in the mathematics curriculum: Mathematical Problem Solving, Communication, Reasoning and Connections.  Students must be active "doers" of mathematics and need to learn to value mathematics in their lives.
  • Mathematics learning is an active and constructive process.
  • Learners are individuals and bring a range of background experiences and knowledge to the math class.
  • Learners learn via various styles.
  • Learners learn at different rates.
  • Learning is most likely to take place in meaningful contexts.
  • Exploration, risk-taking and critical thinking are part of the process.
  • Learners need a supportive environment to nurture positive attitudes and sustained effort.
  • Learning will be most effective when expectations are clear and assessment and feedback are ongoing.
