Rationale for the mathematics program.
There are four unifying
ideas in the mathematics curriculum: Mathematical
Problem Solving,
Communication,
Reasoning and Connections.
Students must be active "doers" of mathematics and need to learn
to value mathematics in their lives.

Mathematics
learning is an active and constructive process.
- Learners are
individuals and bring a range of background experiences and knowledge
to the math class.
- Learners learn
via various styles.
- Learners learn
at different rates.
- Learning is most
likely to take place in meaningful contexts.
- Exploration,
risk-taking and critical thinking are part of the process.
- Learners need a
supportive environment to nurture positive attitudes and sustained
effort.
- Learning will be
most effective when expectations are clear and assessment and feedback
are ongoing.
