Rationale from Foundation for the Atlantic Canada Arts Education Curriculum (p.1):

Education in arts is fundamental to the aesthetic, physical, emotional, intellectual, and social growth of the individual.  It provides students with unique ways of knowing, doing, living, and belonging in the global community.  It also has a key role in the development of creativity and imagination.

Through arts education, students come to understand the values and attitudes held by individuals and communities.  Learning in the arts contributes to an empathetic world view and an appreciation and understanding of the relationship among peoples and their environments.

Education in the arts and learning in other subject areas through arts develop the ...  essential graduation learnings: aesthetic expression, citizenship, communication, personal development, problem solving and technical competence.
