Problem Solving Procedure
Every Monday the students will receive a new Problem of the Week which will be due on Friday. The students must follow the Three Read Strategy found below in order to solve the problem. They will be marked not just on the answer but mostly on the process they have used to work through the problem.
Step 1: 1st Read: Visualize - After choosing a problem and reading it, draw a picture to represent the images you ‘see’ in the problem.
Step 2: 2nd Read: Gather the facts - After reading the problem for a second time, identify the facts or details that you need in order to solve the problem. Record the facts.
Step 3: 3rd Read: Check the facts - During the 3rd read, check the facts. Make sure you understand the question. Record the question.
Step 4: Solve the problem! Show your work and explain your thinking.
