Mercantilism and Staple Resources Web quest
Introduction:
Under
the colonial economic system known as mercantilism, the nations of Europe sought
to acquire and develop colonial hinterlands that possessed abundant natural
resources. Processing and using these resources enhanced the wealth of the
heartland, or home country, creating both prosperity and prestige. An example of
this prestige is found in the quote, "The sun never sets on the British Empire".
In addition to the abundant natural resources, the colonies provided a captive
market for the manufactured goods of the home country.

To do:
Some historians have argued Canada's history, "...is really one of economics, not politics."
What do you think?
Answer the following questions:
Research data on Canada's leading exports today. (i.e. International Trade from Statistics Canada)
Create a graph of your findings. Select the type of graph or chart that would best represent your data.
In addition to the staple products, what other commodities does Canada export? (name at least three)
How do these export products compare with the staple exports of today and during colonial times?
Has Canada's economy evolved from it's colonial roots as a staple producer?
Do you agree or disagree with the statement, "Canada's history is really one of economics, not politics."
