HWHS
Canadian History 11 Assignment Expectations
2008-09

Assignments and readings: As the semester progresses you will be asked to complete a number of assignments and readings. These assignments will reinforce the course material and outcomes related to the course. Some will involve the use of technology; therefore computer access is necessary at school. When completing these assignments, ensure that your name and section are on the top right hand corner of your work before submitting them for a mark. Late assignments will be accepted at a significantly reduced value unless accompanied by a legitimate excuse. Any written responses should be answered in complete sentences. It should be noted that completing all of the various assignments throughout the term can significantly impact a student’s final grade. (15%)

Tests and Quizzes: There will be a number of tests/quizzes this semester. The specific dates for tests will be given at least four days in advance. Tests will be administered in class and will be for the entire period/class. Tests will contain a variety of questions and choices on significantly valued responses. There will be no “make-up” tests unless accompanied by a legitimate excuse. If there is a problem or conflict see me before the test date so that an alternate arrangement can be made. (20 %)

Canadian History Portfolio: This will be a collection of specific assignments relevant to Canada’s history. The portfolio will be submitted near the mid term and the end of the term. For further information follow this link: Canadian History 11 Portfolio. (15 %)

(a)  Research paper (approx. 5 pages with a bibliography)

(b)  An aesthetic representation of your research.

(c)  Multimedia presentation i.e. A brief video, podcast (audio-video presentation) or Heritage Minute (length to be determined)

This project will be assigned early in the semester. In addition to passing in the final product you will be asked to show proof of your progress on set dates prior to the final due date. Included with the independent study should be footnotes/endnotes, bibliography, and a title page. This assignment will represent a substantial portion of your grade, therefore work on it should commence well in advance of the final due date. (15%)

Self Assessment: On various days students will be evaluated for participation, organization, preparedness, and reflection.  Students will have an opportunity for input into their evaluation based on the criteria previously mentioned. Frequent homework assignments should be expected. (5 % )
