Assignment 6.4
1. These metals, gold (Au), silver (Ag), and copper (Cu) show
a pattern in that they:
a) do not react with acids.
b) do not readily react with oxygen.
c) are among the best conductors of electricity.
2. (a) Aluminum (Al) might be considered part of this family because it is as malleable as the copper, gold, and silver. These properties fit the same pattern as the three coinage metals.
(b) Since aluminum reacts with acids and oxygen, which is a different pattern than the other three metals, it should not be included in the same family.
3. (a) Iron (Fe) fits the coinage metal pattern because it is malleable and conducts electricity.
(b) Iron does not follow the same pattern as Ag, Au, and Cu because it reacts with acids and oxygen.
4. Al and Fe show similar pattern in that they are both malleable and react with acids and oxygen. The main difference is their malleability.
