Daurene Lewis
Daurene Lewis is a descendant of Black Loyalist Refugees who settled in Annapolis Royal in 1783. She is also descended from Rose Fortune. Dr. Lewis graduated from Dalhousie University School of Nursing and went on to hold important positions in several Universities, Health Care Facilities and various levels of government.
In 1984 she was elected Mayor of Annapolis Royal, becoming the first Black mayor in Nova Scotia and the first Black woman mayor in North America. Dr. Lewis worked very hard to make life easier and healthier for all Nova Scotians.
