Silent reading schedule:

701 & 702: Friday afternoons in class

701 &702: Library times: Tuesday Mornings

 

***If there is a change in schedule for reading, I will inform the students, but they should have a novel with them at all times, incase they finish work early.

  • Ms Ferguson's first week back...get to know the students
  • Review classroom policies/procedures
  • Continue with short story unit started by Mr Penney
  • Review story plot outline and parts of a short story
  • Read "The Dream" (an Arabian fable)and analyze using story plot outline as a review
  • Will review how to pick books of interest and level appropriateness for students
  • Will continue to read a variety of short story for analysis and comprehension
  • Have (if not done so already) a novel for silent reading and reading activities
  • Ms Ferguson will begin to assess for individual book choices (criteria will include fluency of reading and comprehension)
Week of Dec 6
  • Reader's Theatre presentations--Tuesday (701/2--703 Thurs and Tues..)
  • All 3 classes need duotangs for Wed's class to set up reading journals
  • Metaphor and simile assignment due date--Friday for 701/02...TBA for 703
Week of Dec 13
  • Finishing work with the short story "A Secret for Two"
  • Intro to first reading journal assignment on inferencing (actual assignment will not be assigned until after break)
  • New short story: "A Hundred Bucks of Happy"
  • Intro to Irony for next week's story
  • Be sure to finish any class work at home if not finished in class.
  • 703 Metaphor and Simile assignment due Thurs
Week of Jan 4 (4-day week)
  • New Reading Journal activity assigned (Inference Circle)
  • A look at more types of figurative language (personification, alliteration, oxymoron, onomatopoeia and hyperbole)
  • Personification assignment
  • Short Story Quiz

  • Reading Journal activity due Jan 18

Week of Jan 11
  • Review of figurative language covered last week by incorporating it into writing
  • Beginning final project for short story unit...students are to research Edgar Allan Poe before this
  • Project will be given 3-4 classes to work on it and remainder will be completed at home.  Due date will be assigned next week.

 

Week of Jan 17
  • Final "Reading Minute" practice and sign up for presentations...see above link for schedule
  • Mon-Wed-Thurs will be in class time to work on the Tell Tale Heart project.

  • Tell-Tale Heart project due Friday for 701 and 701.  It is due next Tuesday for 703
  • 701/2 find sample editorials for class

  • Intro to Editorials...students will read various editorials and then analyze them
  • Editorial Survey...start to come up with own topic to write about
  • How to narrow a topic for writing
  • Grammar lesson: Parts of a sentence and how to fix sentence fragments
  • Second week of Reading Minute presentations are on Wed
  • Find a topic for editorial
  • There will be a grammar quiz on sentence fragments next week after we do a mini lesson on run-on sentences
Week of Feb 28
  • Review of sentences part 2
  • Topics for editorials must be chosen by Wed of this week
  • Using graphic organizers to organize info for editorials (t-charts and e-charts)
  • Making sure topic is narrowed and manageable
  • Quiz on sentences part 1 and 2 on Friday for 701/2 and Thursday for 703
  • T-charts of pros and cons for topic is due Wed for 701/2
Week of Mar 7
  • Ist computer research for editorial topic
  • E-charts and topic sentences
  • Starting to write intro paragraphs
  • Have research for Wed
Week of Mar 14
  • Lead sentences, background info and opinions will be looked at and used to write introductory paragraphs for their editorials.
  • Topic sentences will be used to develop 3 body paragraphs
  • There will be one research period this week.
  • Rough draft of intro para due Thursday and rough draft of one body para due next Tuesday.
  • Here is a link to a sample editorial we are using to help write our editorials.
Week of Apr 4
  • Complete rough draft of editorials due Apr 4. 
  • Addition of transition word and phrases to editorials
  • Editing for matters of correctness
  • Reading Journal activity--create 5 Tom Swifties for your novel
  • Intro to media unit if time
  • Final editorial project due Friday, April 15
Week of Apr 11
  • "The House" point of view activity
  • Confusing word pairs
  • Intro to Media unit
  • Confusing word pair quiz Friday
Week of May 2
  • Ad Persuasion assignment
  • Mini lesson on how to write numbers in an essay format
  • Book-selling project will get started
  • Words of the week: virtuous, nefarious and unabashed
  • Ad Persuasion due Thursday
  • There will be a quiz on writing numbers...stay tuned for that date
Week of June 13
  • Formal literature circle work will begin in assigned groups.  Most of this will be completed in class
  • If you miss any time during the lit circle unit, please see a group member on what you missed so you can get caught up.  Reading Journals will be collected next Monday...be sure maps are up to date.
Week of June 20
  • Literature Circles will be completed this Wednesday.
  • Students will then write "I Am From" poems
