  • Will begin ch 3 in textbook with a 'needs' and 'wants' activity
  • A look as socialism and capitalism
  • If time permits, a brief look into the poverty cycle
  • In-class assessment (Savita's Choice) will be assigned for homework if not completed in class
  • Bring in used magazines from home that can be cut for a Social Studies activity...thanks:)
Week of Dec 6
  • Pros and Cons of Socialism and Capitalism and opinion assignment
  • Budgeting activity to look at standards of living (above, below or at the poverty line)
  • If the world were a village of 100 people...video and assignment
  • Socialism and Capitalism assignment due Wed for 701 and 702
  • Budgeting response will be due later in week...see individual homework sites for specifics when available

  • Finishing "If the world were a village posters
  • Cycle of poverty discussions and case study
  • In class assessment on understanding of capitalism and socialism

Week of Jan 4 (4 day week)
  • Intro into chapter 4 ( a look at 4 job sectors...there will be an assignment for this...but may not be introduced until next week)
  • Final assignment for chapter 3...researching an organization that helps to break the cycle of poverty.  Computer time will be given.
  • Ch 3 assignment due Wednesday, Jan 12
Week of Jan 11
  • Starting chapter 4
  • A look at the 4 sectors which jobs fall under (primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary)
  • Job sector poster will be completed to show understanding of each sector
  • Graph will be constructed showing trends of each job over the past years...students will learn which sectors are most popular today and where they are most likely to find jobs.
  • Job sector posters for both classes due next Monday
  • Graphs should be completed in class, if  not, they will be assigned for homework for the next class.  See homework sites for specifics.
  • Ch 3 assignment due Wednesday, Jan 12 (which was assigned last week).
Week of Jan 17
  • A look at demographics and social trends using the Dominican Republic as a case study to help understand the terms
  • Global Economies

 

 
Week of Jan 24
  • Continuation of social trends and demographics...triggers from the DR will be given and students will have to forecast what they think will happen over time
  • 4 categories of global economies
  • Test on Ch 4 next Monday...outline to be given out on Wednesday
Week of Jan 31
  • Start ch 5...former map of Canada and comparing to today's Canadian map
  • Test has been moved to Thursday!
Week of Feb 28
  • Map comparison assignment (1850s-2011)
  • Life in BNA in 1800s
  • Make comparisons to what life is like today.
  • Map assignment will be due Wednesday if not finished in class.
Week of Mar 7
  • Skits to show economies of BNA
  • A look at the elite of BNA and how it effected the First Nations
  • Have skits ready for Wednesday's class
Week of Mar 14
  • A look at the Peoples of BNA...especially the Elite and how they treated the 'non-elite'
  • A connection of unfair treatment of the past to what is going on today.  A look at Darfur and genocide.
  • Also, we will look at the effects of the tsunami and earthquake in Japan.
  • Test next Friday on ch 5.  Outline will be given out this week.
Week of April 4
  • Ways  which groups of people try to get government's attention to listen to their cause.
  • Internet assignment dealing with above point
  • Differences between BNA 1850 and 1830
  • Internet assignment due Thursday for 701 and Friday for 702
Week of Apr 11
  • Engineers without Boarders presentation on "Water for the World"
  • Election 2011 political cartoon analysis
  • Vote posters
  • Leader's Debate discussion
  • Vote posters due Monday, April 18
  • Find articles and cartoons to do with the election and bring to school
Week of May 2
  • How to analyze election results
  • Intro to WWI with a focus on why Britain was becoming worried about Germany

 

  • Election quiz Friday
Week of June 13
  • Battles of WWI project.  Details given in class
  • Due date is TBA
  • Re-test for causes of WWI will be Tuesday the 14th.
Week of June 20
  • Wednesday will be the last class to work on Battle project...due Friday
  • Propaganda during WWI
