Looking for French magazines for your child?

Here is a French site listing many French magazines of various themes.

Interested in science? I recommend “Les débrouillards” and “Les explorateurs”.

Interested in a little bit of everything? I recommend “J’aime lire”.

Dear Parents,

One of my objectives for this school year is to help your child improve on their reading skills. You can play a big part. The best way to become a better reader is to read every day, at school and at home. I ask that you ensure that your child reads daily at home.

Your child can read all sorts of print in French or English such as: newspapers, novels, magazines, articles, recipes and comics. Information can be provided by a variety of sources, including the internet. The school library, the Dartmouth library as well as the Scholastic catalogue offer selections in both languages. In class the students will also have independent reading periods, which include time to record and reflect upon their reading selections.

The goal is for your child to be excited about reading so having them choose the literature of interest is important as well as your enthusiasm and involvement. You can encourage your child to read by taking a few minutes each day to discuss their readings. This way, you will have a better idea of their level of comprehension.

Your child should be reading with ease and expression, without hesitation. Usually, this indicates that the reader has a greater chance of understanding the meaning. We have discussed in class strategies for finding just-right books. Usually, if your child comes to 3 words on a page that they do not know, the reading may be too challenging for them.

Students will select reading material from the school library for their home reading program. Students should read for at least 20 minutes each day.  I recommend alternating languages and fiction/non-fiction readings frequently. You may read together as well as independently.

Sincerely,

Mme Beaton
