Participant Response

Dear Friends,

Thank you for allowing us to host one of your Flat Stanleys. This is our first time doing this project and we were so excited that we wanted to try everything with the Flat Stanley.

We have sent Stanley home with a completed journal along with some pictures. Hopefully they will be useful in your Stanley Displays. Unfortunately we were unable to send any tourist pamphlets of Carlisle along with Stanley. We looked high and low for something to send back but Carlisle is such a small village that no one has published anything about the area. Here are some interesting facts about the area that we have gathered by talking to people who live in the area:

Population: There are approximately 2,500 people residing in Carlisle.

Village Buildings: There is 1 corner store, 1 farmer's market, 2 churches, 1 Doctor's Office, 1 bank, 1 arena, 1 gas station, 1 restaurant and 1 pizza shop.

Occupations: Half of the people in the area run and own their own farms. There are many different things farmed in the area. We have cattle farms, ostrich farms, sheep and goat farms, horse ranches, cabbage farms, pumpkin farms, pony farms, corn farms, apple orchards, blueberry farms, raspberry farms and strawberry farms. We can see most of these farms from the school.

The other half of the people living in Carlisle drive 30 minutes to work in one of the industries in the two nearby cities, Hamilton or Burlington. Most of these people work in the steel industry of Hamilton.

Our School: Our school's name is Our Lady Of Mount Carmel. It is a K to 8 school which 300 students attend. Our class is a grade 1 and 2 split with 23 students. Our school is built on 30 acres of land. We have a soccer field that is surrounded by wooded area that we can hike on in the summer and cross-country ski on in the winter. Our school has a new cross-country ski club. We can ski at lunchtime.

Weather: Carlisle gets a lot of snow, freezing rain, and hail from late November to the end of March. This year the snowbanks were as high as the school for 1 month. It is also very cold here. For the entire month of January we had all indoor recesses because the temperature was less that -20 degrees Celsius. The spring and fall are cool and windy in Carlisle. The average temperature in June is 7 degrees Celsius. It is abnormally cold ere because Carlisle sits on top of the Niagara Escarpment, giving us a slightly higher altitude.

Activities: Most of the activities in Carlisle center around the arena where children figure skate and play hockey. It is also a popular location for community functions like dances and festivals. To do other activities, such as swimming, soccer, gymnastics, arts and crafts, or shopping, most people travel to the nearby cities like Hamilton or Burlington.

When Flat Stanley went on his adventures with the students from the class, he or she most likely went to one of these cities. Along with the journals, we have sent back a poem telling about his adventures. Each of the students added a verse telling about their time with Stan. Some of these activities were also documented in the journal.

We sincerely hope that Stan had a good time. Our class will have some of the same students in it next year, as they move from grade one to grade two. Those students are already anticipating their chance to host a Flat Stanley.

Sincerely,

Miss Mac's Grade 1/2 Class

Ode To Flat Stan

Your name is Flat Stan,

You're a guest in Carlisle.

We're so glad you came,

To stay for a while.

Carlise is lovely,

There are fields, cows, and barns.

If you spend time with Thea,

You may see a farm.

Flat Stan will go swimming,

With Steve who is cool.

He will have fun splashing,

Steve's sister in the pool.

With Dom you will have fun,

This much I know,

When you go to his house,

To play Nintendo.

Chris and Flat Stan

Went to Piano Class.

Stan was so good,

That he got a pass.

My name is Flat Dan,

I have a big pet.

We'll watch a movie with him.

You'll like it, I bet.

Stan and Tess went shopping.

They stopped for a pop.

After they had lunch,

Stan bought a new top.

Stan will come to my house,

In my room we  will play

We will run around,

And pet my hamster all day.

When you come to my house,

I'll show you my cat.

I bet you will have fun

If I make you a hat.

At the Arena,

We had a good skate.

We had so much fun,

And we stayed up so late.

Tori and her family

Are going ice-fishing.

Flat Stan will go too,

And for a fish he is wishing.

Skin Yamaha Banshee Red Camo

My first name is Sarah,

Journal Entries

Judson:Skating

Stanley and I went to MacDonald's for dinner and went skating. Stanley got to ride on the Zamboni.

Tess: Shopping

I took Stan Shopping with me and my mom. We ate lunch at the mall. For dinner we had pizza and watched a movie.

Danielle: Karate

I took Flat Stan to my karate. Before we went I took him out and I played with him. We went in the class and I asked Sensay if we could take a picture and he said, "Yes, Danielle, I would love to." And we took a picture with Flat Stan.

Steven: Swimming And Matchsticks

Today I took Flat Stanley to the YMCA and watched my sister swim. Stanley stayed for dinner. After dinner, Stanley, my dad, and me played matchsticks. We had fun. We play to 15. I won 15 to 14.

Allison: Gymnastics

Flat Stan went in the car. He liked it. He wanted to go down on the bars but they were too high for him. He watched all the kids do gymnastics in my boots. It was so fun! Stanley had a wonderful time at my house he told me.

Sarah G: Snowmobiling

After school me and Flat Stan went snowmobiling. We sat in the caboose.

Sgt. Fab Giuuani: The Military Unit

Flat Stanley visited the 705(HAM) Communication Squadron. Flat Stanley joined us for a day of vehicle maintenance and general duties. He wanted to drive our trucks but he couldn't reach our pedals. It was a very busy day for Stan, but I think he had fun. He is welcome back any time.
