Tangram Stan lives in Dartmouth Nova Scotia. The idea of Tangram Stan originated with the story of Flat Stanley. Flat Stanley is one of a series of books written by Jeff Brown. In this story, Stanley Lambchop is flattened by a bulletin board which falls from the wall and lands on him while he is sleeping. The adventure continues as Stanley carries on his days as a flattened version of himself and finally, having grown tired of being flat, he looks for a way to get back to normal.

Our Flat Stanley is called Tangram Stan. He is a Maritime boy and loves the sea. He is also very partial to Tangrams. Whenever Stanley Travels, he takes his Tangrams with him in his little suitcase. Stanley travels to other classrooms around the world and shows the students there what he can do with his tangrams. He takes them a set of tangrams too and invites them to make tangrams with him and send some home with him to show his friends in Nova Scotia.

Hi!

My name is Flat Stan

I'm a Maritime boy

And coming to visit you

Brings me great joy.

I do love to travel

But even way better

Are the kids that I meet

When they open my letter.

I'd like to meet all of you

And check out your school

I know it is sure to be

Splendid and Cool!

So take me around,

Take me here, take me there

I want to see everything

I'll try not to stare.

There is something else

I need you to see

It's in my travel bag

And its Ge-om-et-ry.

It's my very own set

Of tangrams you see

And wherever I go

It keeps me company.

My tangrams can be

Anything that I wish-

A cat or a goat or

A dog or a fish.

They can even make

A boy just like me

If I'm needing a friend

If  I'm getting lonely.

What I need you to do

And I hope you don't mind

I need you to make

A shape – your very own kind.

I've brought you some tangrams

Just copy them out

Play with them a while

You'll see what they're about.

And after a while

When you've had time to play

Would you make me a shape?

Would that be okay?

Think about where you  live

And what your town's about

And design a good shape

Of which there's no doubt.

Make it some kind of shape

That will show us a bit

About where you live

And make all 7 shapes fit.

Pack your special shape up

(And don't forget me)

And then send us back

To the maritime sea.

My friends will be waiting

To see I've returned

They'll be so excited

To find what I've learned.

Then we'll try your Tangram shape

In our classroom at school

I know they'll all love it

And think its so cool.

But that's not the end

Of the story, my friends

If you visit our website

You'll see me again.

We have your email

Address in our book

And when the site's ready

We'll invite you to look.

So, if you are ready

Come on now, let's go

Show me all that you can

Tell me all that you know

I'm ready to learn

I'm ready to see

I'm ready to play

Are you ready for me?

Although many legends have been written, the true origin of the Tangram Puzzle is unknown. It is believed to have originated in China a very long time ago. The word Tangram in Chinese is The Chinese name is Ch'i ch'iao t'u  which means 'ingenious-puzzle figure of seven pieces'.

The Tangram pieces fit together to form a square. But they can also fit together to form many other shapes as well. There are hundreds of possible shapes and more being made all the time.
