DID YOU KNOW ? A contraction is two words joined with an apostrophe to show the omission of a letter or letters, for example "We will" = "We'll". The word "apostrophe" comes from the Greek phrase prosoida apostrophos, literally meaning "accent of turning away". A punctuation mark showing where a letter or sound has been omitted is therefore called an apostrophe.
