Commonly Confused Words

 


 In English, some words sound and look very much like other words. They can be easily confused and misused, and might seem like a spelling mistake when it is really just confusion about the words.

Accent - a manner of speech characteristic of a certain city, country, or region

Ascent - the act of going up

 

Accept - to take what is offered or given

Except - leaving out; other than

 

All ready - completely ready

Already - before this time

 

Desert - a dry place

Dessert - something sweet eaten after a meal

 

It's - it is

its - belongs to it

 

Then - at that time

Than - is used for comparisons

 

Weather - conditions outside

Whether - if

 

Farther - at a greater physical distance

Further - additional; to a more advanced point

Lay - To put something down

Lie - To place oneself in a resting position

 

Lose - To misplace; to fail to win

Loose - Not firmly attached

 

Personal - Private; relating to a particular person

Personnel - People working in a business

 

Picture - A drawing; painting or photograph

Pitcher - A baseball player who throws the ball to the batter; also a container for holding or pouring liquids

 

Quite - Completely; entirely

Quiet - Making no sound; with little noise; peaceful; still

Quit - To stop; to leave one's job

 

Set - To put something in a place

Sit - To rest the lower body with the weight off the feet

 

Thorough - All that is needed; complete; perfect

Through - From one end to the other
